2012 Holiday Party

Sunday afternoon, Dec. 2nd

The Los Alamos Opera Guild held its annual membership party at the lovely home of Anna and Roland Caspersen. The refreshments offered by the members, under the theme of "Favorite Holiday Foods", were enjoyed by all. The foods reflected the members' backgrounds from a variety of countries, as well as America.
We were delighted to greet our unexpected visitors from the Las Vegas, Albuquerque, and Espanola Guilds. Rod Billingsley flew in the contingent of Karen Topping, Ursel Albers, and Frances Casey from Las Vegas. Dr. Elaine Ré and Astrid Lugowski came all the way from Albuquerque and from nearby Espanola came David and Janice Trujillo.
In all, about thirty people came to the event.
Our own expert in all things opera, Carl Newton, talked about the new season of operas and showed plans for the building plans for the Santa Fe Opera grounds. Julia Fairs, a soprano, presented a beautifully sung program accompanied on the piano by Brian Huysman. Eugene Kovalenko, a cantande bass, (more commonly known as a bass-baritone) sang, a capella, a deeply moving prayer from the ancient Slavic liturgy. All three musicians are from Los Alamos.

Then, a wonderful and unexpected treat. Dr. Ré passed out Christmas carol words in Italian and the audience sang exuberantly to Brian's accompaniment. Unwilling to stop after the Italian versions, the audience requested one after another of their favorite carols to the great pleasure of all. Our thanks to Dr. Ré, and our delightful visitors.
